Karthigai Deepam
Also known as: Karthikai Deepam, Thirukarthigai, Karthika Deepam
Dates follow the Indian calendar (IST). If you’re outside India, your local temple may observe a day earlier or later for tithi-based festivals.
Karthigai Deepam is the ancient Tamil festival of lamps — mentioned in Tamil literature even before Diwali — celebrated when the Karthigai (Krittika) star joins the full moon of the Tamil month of Karthigai. Homes glow with rows of oil lamps at dusk, the day honours both Shiva as an endless column of light and Murugan, born of the six Krittika stars, and at Thiruvannamalai the giant Maha Deepam flame is lit atop Arunachala hill, visible for miles.
