Mattu Pongal
Also known as: Maattu Pongal, Cattle Pongal
Dates follow the Indian calendar (IST). If you’re outside India, your local temple may observe a day earlier or later for tithi-based festivals.
Mattu Pongal, the third day of Pongal, is dedicated to the cattle who make the harvest possible. Cows and bulls are bathed and decorated with painted horns, garlands, and bells, fed sweet pongal, and honoured as family — and in many villages the day brings the famous jallikattu bull-taming events.
