Thai Pongal

Also known as: Pongal, Perum Pongal, Surya Pongal

Harvest🙏 Surya

Dates follow the Indian calendar (IST). If you’re outside India, your local temple may observe a day earlier or later for tithi-based festivals.

Thai Pongal is the Tamil harvest festival and the main day of the four-day Pongal celebrations, marking the first day of the Tamil month of Thai. Families boil the first rice of the season with milk and jaggery in a clay pot until it overflows — a sign of abundance, greeted with shouts of "Pongalo Pongal!" — and offer the dish to Surya, the sun god, in thanksgiving.
